MailBoss Product Features

  1. Are Mail Boss mailboxes US Mail approved?

Yes, all of the curbside Mail Boss security locking mailboxes (Mail Boss Curbside, Package Master and Mail Manager) have been approved by the US Postmaster General.

  2. What does it mean if a locking mailbox is US Mail approved?

In order to stamp “US Mail approved by the Postmaster General” on a mailbox, the manufacturer must demonstrate that their manufacturing process is sound, and that the product meets a certain level of quality and integrity when subjected to harsh environmental conditions. However, the USPS does not include level of security as criteria for approval. In fact, we have found that the vast majority of US Mail approved security mailboxes can be opened with a small screwdriver and very little effort. Some can even be broken into by hand!

  3. Are Mail Boss mailboxes 100% theft proof?

No mailbox is 100% theft proof. However, we have spent much time trying to break into Mail Boss mailboxes with little success. Most US Mail approved locking mailboxes on the market can be opened in a matter of seconds with a screwdriver, or even by hand. Unlike allegedly “secure” 18 gauge to 22 gauge steel, aluminum or plastic mailboxes that we have shown can be bent, broken, and destroyed with minimal effort, the Mail Boss is a formidable mailbox. The patented lock design of the Mail Boss features a positive door locking system, which prevents thieves from prying the door open. The Mail Boss is constructed of galvanized 12-gauge and 14-gauge powder-coated steel for ultimate strength and durability.

  4. How many different models of the Mail Boss are there?

The Mail Boss comes in many models and styles. Curbside mailboxes include the Mail Boss, the Package Master, and the Mail Manager. The curbside models are a single unit for one house. The Mail Boss and Package Master feature a mounting plate on the bottom, which allows you to attach the curbside mailbox to our post or your own, with its many options for attachment. Wall Mount models include the Metro and the Townhouse; they are usually mounted against the side of a house. However, both the Metro and the Townhouse can be mounted to a post if you choose to install them curbside. The Metro and the Townhouse are identical in every way except the Townhouse has a decorative roof and scroll work on the front.

  5. What is included with the Mail Boss?

Every style of the Mail Boss – curbside or house mount – comes with all the required hardware for installation. You will receive the correct sized drill bit and lag bolts for installing the mounting plate to wood. If you choose to mount your Mail Boss to any of our posts, we provide the necessary machine screws. We also include reflective house numbers to adhere to your Mail Boss. Finally, each box comes with three keys; additional keys are available only to customers who provide proof of purchase to ensure there is no unauthorized access to your Mail Boss mailbox.

  6. What are the dimensions of these mailboxes?

The largest outside dimensions of the Mail Boss mailboxes are as follows:

    • Curbside Mail Boss: 21″ D x 11.25″ W x 13.75″ H
    • Mail Boss Package Master: 21.5″ D x 12″ W x 16.5″ H
    • Mail Manager: 21" D x 10.75" W x 11.25" H
    • Townhouse Mail Boss: 7.5″ D x 16″ W x 16″ H

  7. How much does the Mail Boss weigh?

Because the Mail Boss is composed of the most secure and durable materials, they are much heavier than the average locking mailbox. Made of 12 and 14 gauge galvanized, powder-coated, cold rolled steel, the curbside Mail Boss weighs nearly 40 lbs and the Package Master weighs 53 lbs. The Mail Manager, made of 14 and 16 gauge galvanized powder-coated steel, weighs 23 lbs. The Townhouse and the Metro, both made of 14 and 16 gauge galvanized, powder-coated, cold rolled steel, weigh approximately 18 lbs each.

Mail Boss Installation

  1. Is the Mail Boss difficult to install?

No, the Mail Boss and Package Master feature the patented Fast-Trak mounting system, allowing you to quickly and easily install your security locking mailbox. Our competitors’ mailboxes are quite difficult to install, because they require you to work from the confines of the inside of the box. The innovative design of our locking mailboxes allows you to install the Mail Boss in just minutes, but without compromising the security of your mailbox.

  2. Can I use my own post to mount the Mail Boss?

The patented Fast-Trak mounting plate included with the curbside Mail Boss and Package Master has been designed to securely mount to almost any mailbox post available on the market. It can easily be mounted to existing wood platforms or posts as well.

  3. Should I choose an In-Ground or Surface Mount post?

Most of the posts we sell are 43” In-Ground steel posts. In-Ground posts are used for roadside applications, and are generally buried in the ground and secured with concrete. A Surface Mount Post includes a 27.5” steel post and Base Plate. The Surface Mount application is appropriate if you have a 4-8” curb with a walkway or driveway between your yard and the street. For more information about choosing a post, click here.

  4. Do I need to use a Base Plate for the curbside Mail Boss?

No, the base plate is only needed if you have to mount the post and the mailbox directly on cement. We recommend avoiding this type of installation if possible, because very determined thieves may steal your base plate, post, and mailbox unless you use security hardware to mount the plate to the cement and the post to the plate.

  5. Can I install more than one Mail Boss on a single post?

[The following pertains to Mail Boss Curbside, Package Master, or Mail Manager.] Multiple Mail Boss mailboxes can be installed on a single post with the use of a Spreader Bar. Spreaders, available in two, three, and four box designs, allowing you to install up to four Mail Boss locking mailboxes on a single post. All the hardware you need is included. For installation, dig a 1′ x 1′ x 1′ hole and mount the post level in at least two bags of cement. When mounting more than one box on a single post, we strongly recommend that you drive lengths of rebar from the hole into the surrounding dirt at outward angles leaving a portion of the rebar exposed in the hole before installing the post and pouring the cement. We also recommend you dig the hole deeper and wider using a treated wooden 4×4 post which will insert into our steel post. This will dramatically stabilize the post with the additional weight of more mailboxes. Mail Boss posts and spreader bars can only support up to four (4) Mail Boss curbside mailboxes. For more information please see the Installation Guide. If you need to install more than 4 Mail Boss mailboxes in one area, you can use multiple posts and Spreader Bars. Alternatively, you may use a gang plank to securely mount many Mail Boss mailboxes, as long as the integrity of the wood and build of the structure is sound.

Incoming/Outgoing Mail

  1. Does the mail carrier need a key?

The mail carrier does NOT require a key for individual locking mailboxes. It is USPS policy not to carry keys for individual mailboxes. The mail carrier delivers your mail via an incoming mail slot behind the top door of the mailbox.

  2. May I receive small packages using a Mail Boss?

Yes, the incoming mail slot of the curbside Mail Boss is 1.9″ H x 10.5″ W - just large enough to receive a box of checks. The Mail Manager and the Package Master easily accept checks and small packages. The Metro and the Townhouse cannot accept a box of checks but can easily accept mail bundles with an incoming mail slot with dimensions of 1.75″ x 14.5″ on the wall mount models.

  3. How secure is my outgoing mail?

Like any other mailbox, the Mail Boss cannot guarantee the security of your outgoing mail. For this reason, as a preventive measure of security we recommend depositing your outgoing mail at the nearest Post Office location or USPS blue box. Never send sensitive documents like checks or bill payments from an unlocked mailbox.

Mail Boss Customer Questions

  1. “I bought one of your Mail Boss mailboxes from Lowes. I’m a little unclear as to whether my standard wooden post which is currently holding my old mailbox will work for the installation or whether I’ll need some sort of adapter plate? I’m experiencing some problems with mail theft so I want to install your mailbox as soon as it comes in.” (Colin C.)

It will mount to the top of a standard 4×4 or 4×6. I would not advise doing that though. Even if you use long lag bolts, it would be pretty easy to pop it off the post. I would attach a 16-19″ 2×8 or 2×6 to the post with long wood screws through the top and steel 90 degree angle brackets going from your post to the additional piece of wood. This will make it much sturdier.

  2. “I applied the reflective numbers to the side of the box, but would like to remove them. Any advice on how to remove the numbers other than scraping them with a soft blade?” (John G.)

Those numbers sure are adhesive! At any drug or grocery store you can find some stuff called Goo Gone or Goof Off, some kind of product like this that is meant for removing very sticky items. We do not recommend a razor blade because any scratches made will make it very vulnerable to rust. One person in our office even suggested a heat gun.

  3. “I work at Karp’s True Value Hardware in Stamford, CT. We just began carrying your locking mailbox products; I’m impressed by their strength & design. My question is in regards to the posts: Is 12? deep enough for the frost line? Around here, the rule of thumb is usually 18." (Bob)

Very good question. This is covered in the post instructions which can be found in the box. The posts were designed so that a treated 4×4 will fit inside them. If you wanted your post to be buried 18? you simply insert the 4×4 into the post so that 6? of post protrudes out from the steel on the bottom. In some areas like Maine people go to 3.5′ on posts. The same can be done with that. I also recommend using “rebar” stakes going out from the hole at angles before the cement is poured, especially when more than one Mail Boss is mounted on one post. The Post has holes near the bottom that you can use to secure the wood inside the post.

  4. “I like my new Townhouse mailbox. Can you tell me how many unique combinations of keys there are for this model?" (Rod D.)

Originally there were 300 unique locks for the Townhouse and in all of the new units produced August 2008 or later there are a new unique 500 combinations. We will most likely continue to change out lock sets every year or so to ensure the security of our customers.

  5. "What regular maintenance is required for the Mail Boss?" (Jason)

We recommend periodic treatment of your Mail Boss lock with a Silicon-Teflon based lubricant called "Tri-Flow". Spray the lubricant into the lock cylinder every few months to ensure smooth operation of the locking mechanism. In addition, you may want to clean your mailbox with a non-corrosive cleaner such as Simple Green from time to time.

  6. "My key won't open the Mail Boss. What do I do?" (Susan)

If your lock is sticking, there are likely debris stuck in the pins. To resolve the issue, spray "Tri-Flow" into the lock cylinder. Do not use WD-40 or other lubricants, which solve the problem temporarily but can leave residue that actually makes the problem worse. If "Tri-Flow" does not free up the lock, please contact us immediately for assistance.
