Newcastle CA Mail Identity Theft

newcastle_mailtheftIf you live in or nearby Newcastle California or the Sacramento area, it’s time to get a locking mailbox! You may already know that mail thieves have been prowling the neighborhoods stealing mail from unlocked mailboxes and gathering victims’ personal information, credit cards, identification and more.

Although police officers have finally detained 4 suspects (shown right), it’s always better to be safe than sorry. There are plenty of other low-life criminals looking to steal your identity, so protect your information in a locked mailbox.

Below are excerpts from one story on the crooks (emphases added) originally published here:

“NEWCASTLE, CA – Investigators said they arrested four burglary suspects this week, some even wearing clothing taken during a series of Placer County mail thefts and break-ins, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Department.

Aaron Renfro, 32; Elijah Murray, 38; Eziekiel Rutledge, 37; and Rebecca Carrillo, 25, all of Newcastle, were arrested Tuesday on possession of stolen property and mail theft charges, Placer County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Whigam said.

The investigation began last week when a witness told Placer County Sheriff’s Deputy that they saw a late-model BMW with out-of-state license plates stealing mail from victims’ mailboxes.

Seven days later, Deputy Resendes spotted a car matching that vehicle’s description on Interstate 80 at Ophir Road north of Newcastle. Renfro and Carrillo were inside the car and both were in possession of stolen credit cards, drivers licenses and checks, Whigam said.

Investigators said a parole search of Renfro and Carrillo’s Newcastle home turned up even more stolen items, including trash bags full of stolen mail, credit cards, checks, and a substantial amount of property from a home burglary last week. […]

Just because the police have apprehended four suspects, however, does not mean your mail is safe now. If you receive your mail in an unlocked mailbox or a poor quality low-security locking mailbox, you are seriously vulnerable to mail theft and identity theft.

To prevent identity theft at your mailbox, homeowners need to use a security locking mailbox to protect their incoming mail; they should also use a blue USPS secure mailbox for sensitive outgoing mail.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place

Well, that is one way to look at it. However, we (as a company) do not have the power to address the societal pressures / issues etc. that cause people to become criminals. I think we have accepted that identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the nation and it’s not going away anytime soon. So we are simply offering a product that helps people help themselves.
