Mail-Identity Theft: November 2015

This month. mail thieves have been quite busy. They target unlocked mailboxes or pry open low quality locking mailboxes to get sensitive information for identity theft. These crimes tend to peak in November and December, and also during tax season. To protect yourself, use a secure locking mailbox and never send checks or bill payments from an unsecured mailbox. Without further ado, here is the round-up of mail-identity theft and related news from across the United States in November 2015:

  • MORRISON, Colorado: 9 News Mailboxes in Morrison targeted by thieves; “Some residents in Morrison fear they may have had important mail stolen from them. Kim Kelly says her neighborhood’s cluster mailbox units were pried open and the contents taken.”
  • FONTANA, California: The Press Enterprise FONTANA: Suspected arrested in mail thefts; “A man suspected of stealing mail in several Inland cities and a few Los Angeles County cities was arrested Friday, Oct. 30, Fontana police said in a news release.”
  • LOUISVILLE, Kentucky: WDRB.com – Pair charged with stealing mail from Louisville homes; “Two people have been arrested for allegedly stealing mail from two Louisville homes.”

  • ALTUS, Oklahoma: The Lawton Constitution Second Suspect Held In ID Theft Case; “Police Chief Tim Murphy reported that officers found a number of items inside the vehicle. Those included mail, checks and credit and debit cards that belonged to other people.”
  • PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona: San Bernadino Sun 2 Prescott Valley residents arrested in identity theft case; “Then, on October 28, a resident called police and reported that someone driving a black Kia Soul had dumped a large amount of opened mail in the Stone Ridge subdivision. Prescott Valley Police Officers located the vehicle and stopped it on Highway 69 near Prescott East Highway when they noticed more opened mail inside the vehicle.”
  • FONTANA, California: NBC Los Angeles Mail Theft Suspect Arrested in Fontana After High-Speed Pursuit; “Officers searched his car and found “numerous pieces of mail and altered checks,” along with methamphetamine and U.S. Postal keys, police said.”

  • PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona: Daily Courier Prescott Valley couple arrested on charges of identity theft, drug possession; “Detectives obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and for Allen and Walters’ home, where they found a trash can full of stolen mail, 1.3 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, multiple items that had been purchased with stolen credit cards, and four checks stolen from mailboxes.”

  • TULSA, Oklahoma: FOX 23 Police warn against leaving live checks in mailbox; “Police say the only way to keep this from happening is for residents to collect their mail right after it is delivered and shred live checks. For those unable to collect their mail as soon as it is delivered, police say a locked mailbox may be helpful.”

Nov. 5:

  • ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico: KOB 4 ABQ police looking to return $200K in stolen goods; “”This was a highly-organized crime ring that included everything from bank and mail theft, to narcotics trafficking, property crime, residential burglary – all sorts of organized crime,” he said. The ring allegedly stashed everything at a home near Menaul and Louisiana. Police have arrested six of the nine suspects so far.”

  • GRANTS PASS, Oregon: Mail Tribune Emergency services, Nov. 6; “Mallory Michelle Tierney, 30, of the 2900 block of SW Ravenwood Drive, Grants Pass. Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies Thursday arrested Tierney on felony charges of first-degree criminal mistreatment, seven counts of aggravated identity theft, seven counts of aggravated theft and one count of felony mail theft. She was booked Thursday in jail.”
  • OXNARD, California: Camarillo Acorn Woman busted on mail theft charges; “Detective Larry Oriee of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said the mail and identity theft does not appear to be drug related. “Mail theft is usually fueled by the need to get fast money to purchase narcotics,” he said. “This was fueled strictly by the need for money.” They said detectives discovered she stole more than $270,000 from several victims’ bank accounts during a nine-month period to pay off her credit card balance.”

  • FONTANA, California: Inland News Today Mail thief fails to outrun police; “A suspected mail thief can add felony reckless driving to charges already pending against him.”

  • TULSA, Oklahoma: Tulsa World Third person arrested in alleged stolen mail, forgery scheme; “The three are accused of an extensive scheme in which information from stolen mail was used to create fake Oklahoma driver’s licenses and cash fraudulent checks, Detective Mike Heisten with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office said.”

  • FONTANA, California: CBS LA 3 Men, Woman Arrested In Connection With Ongoing Mail Thefts In Fontana; “A search warrant served on a motel room located in the 1300 block of North E Street in San Bernardino, along with a second residence, located more than 500 profiles that contained true identities, stolen checks, social security numbers, IP addresses and other financial information, detectives said.”

  • TRENTON, New Jersey: The Trentonian Robberies lead November 11, 2015 Police Blotter; “Stolen Mail: Someone stole the contents of an envelope from a mailbox on Brickhouse Road. The envelope contained personal identification information.”
  • MONTARA, California: Half Moon Bay Review Montara post office hit again: Boxes rifled for second time this year; “Montara residents were greeted with an unwelcome yet not entirely unfamiliar surprise on Monday when dozens of post office boxes were discovered to have been broken into overnight.”
  • JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colorado: FOX 31 Thieves target mail, a problem that will grow as holidays get closer; ” ‘Tis the season for thieves to target your mail. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said it’s dealing with a rash of mail thefts ranging from Deer Creek to Conifer and all points in between.”
  • JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colorado: CBS Denver Mailboxes Busted Open, Contents Stolen For Fraudulent Purposes; “A week later, deputies received reports of a large number of locked mailboxes that had been burglarized. Investigators started receiving reports of victims’ personal information or financial information, like credit cards, checks and convenience checks being used in the Denver metro area.”

Nov. 12:

  • OAKHURST, California: Sierra Star Mail theft on the rise; “The community of Oakhurst, and surrounding communities, have experienced an overwhelming increase in vandalism to mail boxes, and tampering and theft of mail. What was once a problem primarily from Thanksgiving to New Year is now a daily (or nightly) occurrence. Thieves have been known to follow the mail carrier, stealing packages and breaking into mail boxes in broad daylight, shortly after delivery.”
  • MODESTO, California: The Modesto Bee Modesto police, Postal Service see rise in mail theft: Crimes should be reported to both agencies; “Modesto police and the U.S. Postal Service say there’s been an increase in mail theft recently. “I would say we’ve seen a rise in the last three months,” Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves said Thursday. There were 66 reports from Aug. 1 through Oct. 31, she said, compared with 38 in the three-month period before that.”

  • MAPLE LEAF SEATTLE, Washington: Maple Leaf Life Reports of mail theft continue in Maple Leaf; “Sorry to report that a set of locked mailboxes were pried open (guessing with a crow bar) and mail was stolen. This was in broad daylight and probably shortly after the mail was delivered in the early afternoon.”

  • SALT LAKE CITY, Utah: Deseret News Couple charged in extensive burglary ring; “Prosecutors allege that Dorsey and Bailey obtained these items from multiple locations, including residential burglaries and mail theft.”
  • MCALESTER, Oklahoma: McAlester News Police working on mail thefts; “The McAlester Police Department has been working on a crime spree where thieves are going around and stealing mail out of mail boxes.   • GLENDALE, California: LA Times Police arrest man for alleged mail theft, possession of drug paraphernalia; “A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday after he was caught on surveillance footage breaking into and stealing mail from an apartment building mailbox last month, officials said. Police reportedly found a methamphetamine pipe on him and arrested him on suspicion of burglary and possessing drug paraphernalia.”

  • GUILDERLAND, New York: WTEN 10 Police: Shirtless man caught stealing mail in Guilderland; “Some mail was stolen while other envelopes were found scattered onto the street. Guilderland police said they received calls around 3 a.m. Monday morning from people living on Curry Road and in the Blackberry Estates neighborhood.”
  • LAKE OSWEGO, Oregon: Lake Oswego Review Thieves target cars, mailboxes in Lake Oswego; “Not only were six vehicles targeted in the Westlake and Mountain Park neighborhoods, but police said just about every house on Oriole Lane was hit in a mail-theft spree.”
  • MARBLEHEAD, Massachusetts: Marblehead Patch Police: Suspicious Man Asking for Money; Mail Theft Alert; “At 12:37 p.m., there was a report of an attempted mail theft on Cedar Street. The caller said the package was opened, but the item inside was not taken. She said she wanted to alert people to the possibility of more mail thefts in the area.”
  • DUBOIS COUNTY, Indiana: Dubois County Free Press Public help sought to identify mailbox vandals; “According to the department, on Sunday, they received a large number of reports of vandalized mailboxes.”

  • COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho: 7thSpace.com FBI: Bonners Ferry Woman Pleads Guilty to Possessing Stolen Mail; “According to the plea agreement, in June 2014, Kootenai Tribal Police executed a search warrant at a residence where the defendant was residing. During the search, a Kootenai Tribal Officer seized a suitcase containing mail stolen from individuals in Idaho, Washington and Montana.”
  • OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma: KFOR.com – Mail stolen from N.W. Oklahoma City home, owners believe thieves were tipped off about delivery; “A shopping spree with a stolen credit card. Thieves stole the card right out of the mailbox of a northwest Oklahoma City home. It was all caught on video.”
  • ELIZABETHTON, Tennessee: Johnson City Press – Mail reported stolen in Watauga Industrial Park; “Several pieces of mail were reported stolen in the Watauga Industrial Park over the weekend. Terry Arnold, director of the Carter County Rescue Squad, complained to Cpl. Kirk Carrier of the Elizabethton Police Department that someone had removed the mail from mailboxes belonging to the Rescue Squad, International Paper Company, A-1 Auto Care and Matheson Machine Products.”
  • BROWARD COUNTY, Florida: Sun Sentinel Two men admit having mail that was stolen from condo mailboxes; “James Mathurin, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, who said he worked as a Fort Lauderdale camp counselor for the past five years, also pleaded guilty last month to two counts of possessing stolen mail.”
